The Mamou Police Department, on January 17, began investigating reports of shots fired in the vicinity of Hickory Street and Railroad Avenue.
Once the initial investigating officer, Lt. Cory Benoit, arrived on scene, he began speaking to several witnesses and viewed three males fleeing the area on foot.
Other officers arrived on scene and began searching for evidence. Bullets were located and placed into evidence.
According to the incident report, “While officers were still on scene, a female walked into the police department to advise her son was the person who was being shot at and he is scared for his life and hiding out at her residence.”
The incident report continued, “the female subject stated her son fears that if he comes forward and writes a statement or files a complaint then he will be victimized by retaliation. The son stated to her that the suspect, who shot at him, while he was in his vehicle, was a juvenile. He advised he had previous encounters with the juvenile where he was a victim of an armed robbery.”
The armed robbery occurred in December when, according to the incident report, “Markentae Williams and two other boys jumped the victim, took his PS4, and pulled a 95 G on him.”
Williams was subsequently arrested by Mamou Police and charged with first degree robbery and possession of Schedule I marijuana. Also arrested for his alleged role in the incident was Christopher Coleman, who was charged with armed robbery and armed robbery attempt with use of firearm.
After the mother of the victim reported this to the police, another female entered the police department and stated she was with the victim at the time the shots were fired on Railroad Avenue.
According to the incident report, the female “stated she was going to get a ride with the victim and she had crossed three male subjects. When she arrived at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Pine Street, she began talking to the victim in his car. A person then began to fire a gun at then.”
The incident report continued, “The female advised she jumped into the car of the victim with her child, and they sped away from the area.”
While the female was giving her statement, officers were dispatched to the area of 9th Street and Hickory Street where a female advised her son was with the juvenile suspect at the time of the shots being fired. The son and his mother, along with a second juvenile and his father, went to the police station where the juveniles gave statements to the police.
According to the incident report, both juveniles stated they were with the suspect at the time of the incident but were “not aware the shooting was going to take place.”
“Both juveniles stated after the victim passed with his car heading north on Railroad Avenue,” continued the incident report, “is when the suspect pulled out a handgun from his waist band of his shorts and fired the weapon toward the car.”
The following day, on January 18, the mother and aunt of the suspect took him to the police station where they were advised he had an active warrant for his arrest. The suspect was then arrested by police and booked on charges of two counts of attempted second degree murder, illegal discharging of a dangerous weapon, and illegal possession of a firearm by a juvenile.”
