VILLE PLATTE – State Sen. Heather Cloud, district 28, learned about all the offerings at South Louisiana Community College’s campus in Ville Platte last week.
Carleen Jones, C.B. Coreil Campus director; and Camille Conaway, vice president for Policy and Industry Partnerships with Louisiana’s Community and Technical College System guided the tour with Sen. Cloud.
The senator was particularly interested in educational paths for inmates and dual enrollment opportunities for high school students.
“I believe wholeheartedly in equipping our qualified incarcerated population with quality education career paths and high-demand job training and certifications,” she said. Being an educator, Sen. Cloud noted she has an interest in expanding the college’s dual enrollment program with the Evangeline Parish School system as well.
The C.B. Coreil Campus offers hands-on training programs to students who want to learn a skill and go right into the workforce or start their journey to a four-year degree. Program offerings include business, general studies, medical assistant, practical nursing, and welding.
In addition, the campus offers an Adult Education program for individuals seeking a high-school equivalency diploma. The campus partners with the local Community Action Center to defray costs for the HiSet exam for Adult Education students and stipends for students in medical assistant, practical nursing, and welding programs.
“It was a pleasure to have Sen. Cloud on campus,” said Jones. “ We’re excited to work with her office to grow the campus and help our community through educational partnerships.”
