Christmas lights and decorations of red, white, and green have sprung up in Mamou recently as in other parts of the world to signify the birth of our Lord is near.
While most of these decorations are the same, one unique item rests on 6th Street outside Vidrine’s Tire. This unique item in a Christmas tree made out of old tires.
According to Paul Deculus, from Vidrine’s Tire, the tree “was a collective effort.” He added, “I turned it over to the guys, and they just ran with it. We started gathering up some old tires that we used to throw away for scrap, and this tree is what they came up with.”
Deculus said the guys from the shop were really receptive to the idea of making the Christmas tree. “Everybody is looking forward to the holidays,” he said. “A couple of the guys have young kids, so we’re just trying to be festive.”
Vidrine’s Tire, according to Deculus, is one of the most masculine businesses in town, so people in town are surprised to see the shop getting into the Christmas spirit. However, as he said, “We really have had a lot of people commenting on and enjoying the tree.”
Making the Christmas tree is another way Vidrine’s Tire participates in Christmas activities in Mamou as it rode in the town’s Christmas parade earlier this month. As Deculus concluded, “We’re just trying to give back to the community.”
