For the way it informally sought about finding solutions for issues of culverts in the village, the use of the baseball and softball fields, the parking of a gasoline truck in a residential area, and abandoned properties, the Pine Prairie Village Council earned recognition from Jerrie LeDoux, community liaison for Congressman Mike Johnson.
“I go to a lot of council meetings,” LeDoux told the council during its meeting last week. “It’s important for us to be in the community listening to what is going on. This has been a pleasure tonight.”
She continued, “The way that you have conducted business and really tackling what’s important and the way you’ve been interacting is so encouraging to me. I have to sit through a lot of meetings. I don’t see this kind of meeting where you are all one mind and are going in one direction.”
Mayor Quint West replied, “I think it’s because we all have been here all our lives. We think of clean Mayberry. We all want what’s best, and I think that’s what makes us work so well.”
Ledoux went on to say, “It’s beautiful. I want you to know it’s not like this in D.C. right now.”
She added, “It truly blessed me to watch the dynamics tonight.”
Earlier in the meeting, Mayor West reported the Valentine’s Day contest was a success with about 70 entries.
“Everything went smoothly,” he stated. “The kids loved it. We got a lot of positive feedback. I think we need to work on doing more like that for the kids especially with the way the world is now. They’re looking for something to do.”
In other business, the council:
• heard from Evangeline Parish Assessor Chris Guillory in support of the proposed one-cent sales tax for the sheriff’s department.
• approved an ordinance appointing the clerk and tax collector.
• approved an ordinance setting the mayor’s salary and expenses.
• approved an ordinance setting the council’s salary and expenses.
• approved an ordinance setting the chief of police’s salary.
