High school graduations in Evangeline Parish will take place on the dates as originally scheduled but will see some modifications because of the lingering effects of the coronavirus.
Public school principals and staffs, along with supervisory personnel from the school district, have been creatively and excitingly planning virtual graduation ceremonies. The decision to proceed with the modified graduation ceremonies was shaped by the results of an online survey.
The public schools are planning to conduct graduation ceremonies that comply with the president’s guidance and the governor’s order limiting gatherings to 10 people or less, maintaining 6-feet of physical distance, and wearing masks or facial coverings. The ceremonies will be broadcasted live on Facebook and other available media.
The public school ceremonies will be as follows:
Ville Platte High School on Thursday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. on campus.
Pine Prairie High School on Thursday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. on campus.
Basile High School on Friday, May 15, at 6 p.m. on campus.
Mamou High School on Friday, May 15, at 6 p.m. on campus.
Each school will provide more details regarding its graduation.
As for Sacred Heart High School, a graduation ceremony is planned for Sunday, May 10, at 5 p.m. on the high school football field. While the Diocese of Lafayette has given permission to conduct the ceremony outdoors, the school is required to adhere to the following directives:
• Those in attendance will be graduates, faculty, and parents. Realizing family and friends would like to watch the ceremony, it will be livestreamed.
• Those in attendance are encouraged to comply with social distancing guidelines by wearing face masks and sitting 6-feet apart between each set of parents. Reserved signs will be posted for each graduate’s parents. Seating for parents will be in the bleachers; therefore, bleacher seats are encouraged.
The seniors are required to report to the high school pavilion by 4:30 p.m.
Also, the annual Graduation Edition will be printed in the Ville Platte Gazette on Sunday, May 24.
