Mamou Police Chief Brent Zackery, during the council meeting held Wednesday, December 9, reported his department has been getting several noise complaints about residents riding motorized bicycles.
The chief said he found nothing in the law books regarding the issue but went on to say the riders must obey all traffic laws. “It’s the same as a moped,” he explained.
According to the chief, “If your bike has 1.5 horsepower or more, which is the same size as a weedeater, then you need to have a safety helmet and possess a valid driver’s license in order to drive that bike.”
Chief Zackery added proper turning signals must be used as well as proper lighting if the vehicle is driven at night.
The department will be cracking down on such violations.
