During the Mamou Council meeting held Wednesday, Chief of Police Brent Zackary warned of increased expenditures of the department related to COVID-19.
The reason is because the town jail is now holding felony prisoners that it would normally send to the parish.
“Lately,” the chief said, “the sheriff’s department is taking them, running them through, and sending them back, so we’re having to house them until they can bound out. We are housing some who we usually don’t because of what’s going on now.”
Later in the meeting, Mayor Ricky Fontenot addressed the state entering Phase I.
“I’m excited about us opening back,” he said, “but the bar owners are calling us and don’t understand why they can’t open. We have to follow whatever the governor says. This COVID-19 has thrown a spoke in the wheel for everybody.
In other business, the council heard from town attorney Peter Savoy on abandoning town property.
