The Rotary Club of Ville Platte kicked off the new year by hearing from State Representative Rhonda Butler on new possible projects coming to Evangeline Parish such as a meat processing plant, a drug court, and a new parish jail.
Representative Butler also spoke about a proposed gas tax that will wind its way through the legislative process during this coming session.
She said the legislation is a restructuring of highway funding which would cap DOTD’s use of highway funds.
Four cents of the existing 16 cents would be placed in a construction subfund which is already in place under the Constitution. That money would then be spent on roads and bridges.
The following week, on Tuesday, January 12, the club heard from Rotary District 6200 Governor Yvonne Norman who plugged the upcoming district conference in Opelousas.
Norman also spoke about the option of creating a satellite club. “They would choose to meet at a different time,” she said. “A satellite club could be a club that is made up of a particular career.”
Norman added it takes eight people to form a satellite club.
