At Wednesday’s Evangeline Parish School Board Meeting, Eva Waites from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society reported parish students raised a grand total of $13,034.12 in the Pennies for Patients campaign.
“We reach out to schools across Mississippi and Louisiana,” Waites said. “Evangeline Parish did a district-wide campaign in December and did an amazing job.”
Superintendent of Schools Darwan Lazard said the schools were broken down into a small school and large school category. “They did so well,” he said, “that I added a third category which was an overall category.
Bayou Chicot Elementary was the large school winner with $1,490.12; Chataignier Elementary was the small school winner, and James Stephens Montessori was the overall winner with $2,452.50.
Lazard explained those “campuses were the top three campuses in the campaign in terms of giving.”
He added, “We want to congratulate those principals, teachers, and students and their families for supporting such a worthy cause.”
Lazard also explained the district will be following the guidelines from the National School Board Association regarding the recent Covid-19 outbreak.
“We are being proactive and are doing everything that we need to do to keep everybody safe to the extent that we can.”
