An alleged domestic disturbance escalated when a bullet was fired puncturing a pane of glass on the front door of the residence, according to a press release from Evangeline Parish Sheriff Eddie Soileau.
“Late Saturday night, August 31, 2019, deputies were dispatched to the 6800 Block of US Highway 167 N regarding a medical complaint,” the press release stated. “Deputies arrived and spoke with an adult female, who stated she and her husband had been in a verbal dispute most of the day and later that evening before nearly being shot in the head by a stray round from a firearm that her husband was in possession of.”
The press release continued as follows: “During deputies’ initial investigation, deputies learned from Jarred Todd Leger (husband) that his firearm accidentally fired while in his hands on the porch nearly striking his wife in the head. The round travelled through the glass of the front door through the home into a cabinet with its final resting place being in the wall of the cabinet.”
“After further investigations and gathering of statements, Leger was charged with attempted second degree murder. He was arrested peacefully and transported to the Evangeline Parish Jail for booking. The Warrant of Arrest was signed by 13th Judicial Judge Chuck West with no bond pending a Gwen’s Law Hearing.”
“A hearing was held at a later date by 13th Judicial Judge Gary Ortego. At that time, the charge was amended to aggravated assault with a firearm, and Leger was allowed to post bail.”
