Basile Police Depertmrnt unable to pay officers

The payroll for the Basile police department was unable to be paid on Friday, May 24 due to the lack of funds in the police department budget, according to Basile Mayor Mark Denette. Only Police Chief Ivory was compensated for the past two weeks period.
Officer Michael Thomas agreed to patrol on Friday night with Police Chief Ivory and Asst. Chief Wilbert McClinton on call, according to Councilwoman Latoya Howze. All other police personnel have indicated that they will not be working their shifts.
The La. State Police, Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Dept., and Evangeline 911 were notified of the situation and pledged assistance when needed. This situation will likely remain until the end of the fiscal year on July 1.
