Retired supervisor of alternative education, Fannie Soileau, has announced her bid to run for a seat on the Evangeline Parish School Board from District 10.
Soileau’s announcement is as follows:
I, Fannie Soileau, am hereby announcing my candidacy for Evangeline Parish School Board, District 10. I am the proud mother of two amazing children, a daughter, Nikki (deceased) and a son, Joey, both of whom graduated from Bayou Chicot High School. Joey has given me five beautiful grandchildren, ranging in age from 21 to 6.
My devotion to education has been a lifelong event. After graduating from Opelousas High School in 1967, I set my sights on achieving my dream of becoming a teacher and making a difference in the lives of children. Toward that goal, I received a bachelor’s degree in education from McNeese State University, a master’s degree in administration and supervision from LSU and certification in child nutrition from ULL. I retired from Evangeline Parish School Board after 33 years of service. In that time, I worked as a teacher of English, algebra, and journalism at Ville Platte High School, supervisor of alternative programs for 15 years, and child nutrition director for 10 years. Although retired, my love for teaching and my love for kids has remained in my blood. Currently, I am tutoring second grade students at Ville Platte Lower through Title I funds.
In my role as supervisor of alternative education, I wrote and obtained a federal grant to open the ACE School, a school that removed the overaged students from the elementary campuses and got them back on track, while learning a trade. Making a difference in their lives was my ultimate goal. I also wrote policies for the school board and worked on legals, as well as managing budgets and training teachers. As food service director, I not only handled budgets, but also trained and supervised 100+ employees, while running the entire program for all 11 cafeterias in the parish.
Having worked at three levels in the school system, I feel that I am qualified for this position. As you can see, education has been my life.
Thank you for considering me as your next District 10 school board member.
