Louisiana State Police, on Thursday, August 3, announced charges against 23-year-old Vonteeko Anderson have been upgraded to include first degree murder. The upgraded charges stem from Anderson’s alleged role in the deadly shooting that claimed the life of Deputy Marshal Barry Giglio.
According to State Police, Anderson was rebooked into the Evangeline Parish Jail shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2. He is being held with no bond.
“Anderson was already being held in the jail following an investigative search preceding the Ville Platte shooting on Monday, July 31,” State Police said in a release. “During that search, a weapon was found along with illegal narcotics.”
Anderson was originally charged with possession of a firearm with certain CDS offenses or while committing a crime of violence and manufacture, distribute, or possess with intent to distribute schedule I CDS. At the time, his bond was set at $100,000.00.
Another individual was arrested in connection with the shooting but was released without being charged.
It was also learned a second victim has died from injuries sustained during the incident. According to the Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office, 53-year-old Sistrane Edwards suffered a single gunshot wound. Another individual was shot and remains in critical condition.
