Ville Platte, LA – In response to the alarming rise in crime in Ville Platte, Senator Heather Cloud and Representative Rhonda Butler have stepped up their efforts to bring about meaningful solutions for the safety and security of the community.
However, both legislators emphasize that their role at the state level limits their ability to directly resolve local law enforcement issues, and they urge local leaders to take swift, decisive action.
Senator Cloud has been actively working to involve community members, state officials, and local leadership to address the ongoing crime problem and explore long-term solutions. Her efforts began with organizing a community meeting where the citizens of Ville Platte could voice their concerns, share their experiences, and propose ideas to tackle the crisis.
"We need to come together as a community first and foremost. This problem isn’t going to be solved by one entity or one person—it will take all of us working together," said Sen. Cloud.
Building on this effort, she brought in key state leaders, including the Louisiana State Police and the Attorney General’s office, to provide much-needed assistance and guidance to local law enforcement. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Sen. Cloud also coordinated with the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office to offer strategic advice to the Ville Platte Police Department and the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, guiding them toward forming a joint task force that could focus on reducing crime in the city and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, Sen. Cloud has been working closely with the Ville Platte Mayor’s office, offering guidance on potential legal solutions to address the shortcomings within the Ville Platte City Police Department.
"We cannot stand idly by while our citizens are living in fear. We must explore every possible avenue to create a safer, more secure Ville Platte," added Cloud.
Several options are now on the table for the city’s future law enforcement structure. These include:
Keeping the police department as is while finding a way to fund the sheriff’s office to provide additional support to address the crime crisis.
Allowing time for the Ville Platte Police Department to turn things around, with hopes that internal improvements can stabilize the situation.
Suspending most police department operations except for the chief’s salary and legally required services, and using the freed-up funds to resource the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, which would take over policing responsibilities for the city.
"These options must be carefully considered by city leaders and the community," said Rep. Rhonda Butler. "Our goal is not to take anything away from Ville Platte but to ensure that its citizens are protected and served with the resources we have available. However, because this is primarily a local issue, Senator Cloud and I are limited in how much we can intervene from the state level. We are here to offer guidance and state resources, but it is the local leadership that must implement these changes."
In response to Sen. Cloud’s request, Gov. Jeff Landry has activated a special task force under the Louisiana State Police, which has already begun deploying additional personnel and resources to help contain the immediate crisis. However, this is a short-term measure, and long-term solutions must be put in place.
"This task force is an important first step, but it’s only a temporary fix," said Cloud. "We need to put permanent structures and strategies in place that will prevent crime from returning to these levels. The safety and well-being of Ville Platte’s families is at stake, and we won’t rest until we see results. But we also must recognize that the path forward lies in the hands of local officials, and we are committed to supporting them in that endeavor."
Both Cloud and Butler are committed to continuing their efforts to work with local, state, and law enforcement officials to ensure Ville Platte’s future is secure.
