Doctor Brandon Fontenot shared that he and his children grew a watermelon that weighed 48 pounds. According to Fontenot, only one in 1 thousand melon reach that size. “I decided to plant watermelon for the first time since I was a kid,” he said. “I always relied on my dad for watermelons when he was alive. However, this year, my kids and I got together and planted our own watermelon patch not to think that I would make a watermelon anywhere near this size. I still have anywhere between 14 to 16 watermelons on the plants still growing. It’s been a very pleasurable experience and fun for both my kids and me. I bought the plants at a local store here in town and planted them on a sandhill that my kids have used in the past for playing. However, this year, we didn’t have any plans for it, so I decided to plant the melons in the sandbox instead. It is a location that gets plenty of sunlight and is well drained.” Fontenot is pictured on the right with his children (from left) Maddox, Eden, and Rhett. (Photo courtesy of Dr. Brandon Fontenot)
