Experiencing enjoyment doesn’t require memory. Enjoyment for the memory impaired comes in simple and manageable steps and communicating one instruction at the time. Reality orientation, such as sharing stories of days gone by or reminiscing over family pictures, promote the residents’ self esteem. Pet therapy is also key to some, while others prefer a walk outdoors to discuss nature and weather conditions. Music, exercise, and social visits are always pleasurable. A favorite is a scenic drive to nearby parks or a country road. Exercise plays a huge part in reducing stress and depression, which are common symptoms by the individuals with memory impairment. Laughter is the best medicine, or so they say, so we try to stay focused on being happy.
