Mamou still undefeated in district after key win over Iota

IOTA -- The Mamou Lady Demon softball team is on a roll, winning seven of their last eight games, including a gigantic 5-2 win over the Iota Lady Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Mamou is now 10-3 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in District 5-3A play. The Lady Demons will host the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers in a big showdown today. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
It was a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings of play, as neither team could produce much in the way of offense. Iota had runners reach second or third base in the their first three at bats.
However, Mamou starting pitcher Dacia Richard and the Lady Demon defense did everything they could to hold the Lady Bulldogs scoreless. Mamou in contrast could only get a single base runner in the first three innings of play.
In the top of the fourth inning, Iota finally broke through scoring a single run. The only run came on a solo home run with two outs.
Mamou tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Richard doubled, giving way to courtesy runner Alyssa West.
West reached second base on a fielders’ choice that also allowed Tierane Thomas to reach first. The very next batter, Angel Menier singled, plating West and making it a 1-1 game.
After blanking Iota in the top of the fifth inning, Mamou got back on track offensively. A one out walk put Sophia Fritz at first base.
Madi Fontenot followed with a single, putting runners at first and second for the Lady Demons. A ground ball to the Lady Bulldog first baseman pushed the runners to second and third, but made it two away.
Nevertheless, the Mamou bats stayed hot. Taylor Douget doubled, scoring Fritz and Fontenot. Richard continued the hit parade, doubling for the second time in the game and scoring Hannah Israel who had come in to courtesy run for Douget.
A single by Thomas plated courtesy runner West and gave the Lady Demons a commanding 5-1 lead. Iota picked up another run in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to stop Mamou from being the only undefeated team in district at this point.
