During Wednesday’s council meeting, Mamou Police Chief Brent Zachary asked the council to terminate the employment of one of his officers, Alex Dunn, for failing to report to assigned shifts since Friday, October 4th. As of Monday, October 7th, the police department has been unsuccessful making contact with him. Dunn still has not returned his uniform or equipment, and he has abandoned his post. Zachary also said Dunn has been writing checks at businesses. “I don’t allow officers to conduct themselves that way. As soon as I found out, I talked with him. I talked with the business owner. I also talked with the D.A.’s office. I am having him charged. He has a warrant out for his arrest.”
The council agreed to terminate the officer’s employment. Lieutenant Corey Benoit with the Mamou Police Department said Alex Dunn is wanted for theft and malfeasance in office. The theft is for allegedly borrowing two firearms from officers and pawning them. Benoit said both guns have been recovered. As for the checks Zachary mentioned, allegedly Dunn wrote NSF checks at businesses, using his personal checking account.
Alex Dunn was a detective at the Ville Platte police department but resigned earlier this year. He has no record of wrong-doing there. Ville Platte Police Chief Neil Lartigue said Dunn left the department “because after the budget cuts there was no more overtime.” He added, “He was a good employee.” He said about six months ago, Dunn left to go work at the Mamou police department.
According to a Facebook post belonging to an Alex Dunn who has a cover photo of him wearing a VPPD shirt, one of his last posts states he is in Houston.
