While braving the below 30 degree weather Tuesday, the Ville Platte Rotary Club returned to Main Street Pizza for an abbreviated meeting to begin the new year.
During the meeting, President Wayne Vidrine again updated the club on things that are happening. One of the things is that he along with Rotarians Eric Gil and Dr. Willie Buller traveled to Beaumont yesterday to deliver a hurricane recovery check to the Beaumont Rotary Club. The money will be used to help buy coats for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Vidrine also reminded the club that Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungessor will be at next week’s meeting to visit about Chicot Park. “I’ve invited a number of guests,” Vidrine said. “We have the police jury coming, the Chamber of Commerce coming, and some of the mayors in the area are going to be here. “
“It’s a very important meeting for the future of Evangeline Parish and for the impact of Chicot State Park,” he continued. “We have to do what we have to make everybody aware.”
Club Secretary Susan Saunders went on to commend one of her fellow Rotarians. “I just wanted to commend Steve Phillips for doing a great job on Sacred Heart Church,” she said. “It’s beautiful, and it came in time for us to have Christmas there.”
In community news, Rotarian and Mayor of Ville Platte Jennifer Vidrine updated the club on things going on around the city including that the new police units will hopefully be delivered within the next 90 days.
“Before people call city hall and say there isn’t any water, we’re still asking them to check to make sure their pipes aren’t frozen,” she said. “We’re still collecting coats and blankets for the homeless veterans, but we’re also collecting for people who are cold and need some blankets or some coats. People can drop them off at city hall.”
The mayor also addressed another hot topic this time of year which is property taxes. “If you don’t want to get out in the cold, you can pay your property taxes online,” she said. “Just have your assessment number. You can go to www.cityofvilleplatte.com.”
“Property taxes will become delinquent on February 1, so you have all the rest of January,” she continued. “Come February 1, the late fees will kick in, and the first one is $51.50. It just escalates from there.”
