When you read through the book of Ecclesiastes, you realize Solomon went on a quest for the best by using his vast wealth and power to pursue every pleasure that came to mind. After all of his searching, he concluded such a life is “vanity and vexation of spirit.” (Ecclesiastes 2:26 KJV) None of those things gave him lasting pleasure or fulfillment, yet we have people, both inside and outside of the church, who are attempting to do the same thing.
We have just finished Christmas, and as usual, there were many people who were disappointed because they didn’t get everything they wanted. They have fallen into the trap of thinking like the world, lusting for more and more and becoming more and more disheartened and disappointed. Even many people in the church don’t have their thoughts centered on Jesus, but on themselves. This is why the Bible says in Romans 12:2 KJV, “And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.”
When we have accepted Christ and made Him the Lord of our lives, we have “the best” that heaven and earth have to offer. We don’t have to look to the things of this world, which are here today and gone tomorrow. The Lord promises us eternal life. What a gift! Let’s not concentrate on the temporal, but on the eternal. In a quest for the best, we find a relationship with Christ is vastly superior to anything else.
