Jesus’ disciples had to share something of the enmity, the hate and opposition that Jesus encountered. Jesus told His disciples, “If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?” (Matt. 10:25 KJV). During His brief stay on earth, Christ was a shield of protection to them. As servants of Christ, sent out by Christ as evangelists, they brought their successes and their disappointments to Him that He might sanctify their successes and relieve their disappointments. When the enemy came against them like a flood, they fell back on His power and found defeat swallowed up in victory.
As sinners, burdened with a sense of guilt and craving mercy and reconciliation, we run to Christ, who is our shield of protection. When sorrow encompasses us, and we are in the depths of disappointment and despair, we run to Christ who is touched most keenly with the feeling of our trials. He is our refuge and strength and He softly whispers, “Be not afraid, for I am here with you.”
