Minister’s Corner: The struggle with greed

The country suffers from a malady called consumerism. Everyone knows the key to happiness is found in one word, “more.” More money, more power, more cars, and more stuff equals happiness. The American dream is all about the accumulation of things. The dream is all about working jobs you don’t like to make money so that you can buy things you don’t need. We go through life saying I need this, I need that, and I have to have those things, but, in the end, what do we actually need? We need food, water, clothing, and maybe shelter. Everything else is just a glorified want. Sure there are things that make life easier. There are things that make life seem more enjoyable or more comfortable. But, ultimately, they are not things that we need.
The country artist Shania Twain wrote a song called “Ka Ching.” It is a social commentary upon the American way of life. The chorus of that song goes like this, “All we want is more, a lot more than we had before.” That kind of sums it all up doesn’t it?
The problem is not money or stuff. There is this wonderful misconception that money is the root of all evil, but it is actually the love of money which is the root of all evil. Money is not the good or evil in and of itself. The problem is that we have bought onto this idea that money or stuff will make us happy. We equate happiness with riches.
Avarice and greed are things we all struggle with on some level in this life. The new car is wonderful for a while, but it loses its luster. The latest cell phone technology is fun, but really life is about the same. You hoped something else will fill you up, and it doesn’t. Why? It’s because it wasn’t meant to.
The reality of the situation is that God wants us to turn to Him again and again and again to be filled with living water. Trusting in Him, depending on Him, and waiting on Him. And that failure to rest in God and all that He is and has done for us, that belief that God is holding back some good thing that we should have is “greed.” Thinking that we should have more than what God has provided to be satisfied is “greed.” It’s time to be set free from the greed and turn to the Savior who can fulfill the deepest longings of your heart!
