Looking Back: September ‘58, ‘68, and ‘78

September 4, 1958
•Ville Platte High School, along with all other parish schools, will open Monday morning at 8:30 for the 1958-59 session, according to Principal J.D. LaFleur.
The new president of the student body, Jerry Clyde Foret, will welcome the teachers, parents and students at a short assembly in the high school gym at 8:30 a.m. and school schedules will be distributed and explained at that time.
• Ice cream was .89, and honey graham crackers were .33.

September 11, 1958
•The police salary in Ville Platte will be raised to compensate for the loss of the state bonus which varied according to years of service and position. Chief of Police Leonard Young with 29 years of service received a $50 bonus. His former salary will be raised by $50. Policemen Rene Fuselier and Elie Fontenot will receive $33.32 and $16.66 respectively.
• Round steak was .79 a pound.

September 25, 1958
•Rain haunted the proceedings of the Centennial Celebration throughout the week, but even so two handsome parades were staged. These were the Centennial Parade of Thursday featuring many a horse drawn vehicle, and the Children’s Parade on Friday followed by the cutting of the nearly 500 pound birthday cake which hundreds of children enjoyed.

September 5, 1968
•Corned beef was .69 and a full cut steak was .89.

September 12, 1968
•The Evangeline Parish Jury Commission met Monday to select a list of prospective grand and petit jurors for the fall session of 13th Judicial District Court, according to Clerk of Court Walter Lee.
The grand jury will be empaneled Monday, September 16, and arraignments are scheduled before Judge Joe R. Vidrine on September 23. The first week of petit jury will begin October 7 with two other sessions slated for October 21 and November 4.

September 7, 1978
• The City of Ville Platte anticipates a total of $334,000 in federal revenue sharing funds.
Phil Lemoine, City Clerk, said the city had originally been notified it was to receive several thousand dollars less in federal revenue sharing funds than the $344,000, but Mayor Cecil LeBas filed an appeal for more funds and, through the help of U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston and Louisiana Congressional members, the figure was increased.
•Persons in the Ville Platte area pledged $3,571 to muscular dystrophy over the weekend in the annual Labor Day Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Local telethon headquarters was in the Evangeline Bank and Trust Co. building. In addition, said Bob Eastin, local telethon chairman, cash contributions in the “fish bowl” in the bank totaled $646.40.
•An eight pack of beer was $1.59, peanut butter was $1.59, and mayonnaise was $1.19.

September 14, 1978
•The Evangeline Parish Police Jury Tuesday called a special election for the office of Evangeline Parish Coroner.
The office has been filled since the resignation of Dr. Ramson K. Vidrine by acting coroner Dr. Charles Fontenot for a number of months.
•Fourteen riders competed for eight positions in order to be eligible to compete in the 1978 Tournoi Sunday afternoon.
