Heritage Manor News: May observances

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by Patricia Duplechin, resident activity director at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Ville Platte. This column runs every Sunday in The Gazette.)
The observances of May include Arthritis Awareness Month, Better Sleep Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, National Walking Month, Women’s Health Care Month and National Stroke Awareness Month. May is host to Nurse Appreciation Week. The Kentucky Derby is held the first Saturday in May. Star Wars Day is celebrated May 4. It is the third and last month of the Spring season.
The birthstone of May is emerald. It symbolizes success and love. May was once considered a bad luck month to get married.
On May 10, 1908, the first Mother’s Day was observed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Every year, May 4, is observed as International Firefighter’s Day. They are recognized for serving their community or dedicating their lives to protecting the safety of us all.
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5. May 29, is Memorial Day, which is considered the unofficial beginning of summer. It is also, most importantly to us, Nursing Home Week, from Mother’s Day, May 14, through May 20. We have a lot of things planned for that week.
