From a Panther to a Bengal

PINE PRAIRIE -- Newly signed LSU-Eunice guard Kameron Allen is a rare breed. Pine Prairie girls basketball coach Renotta Edwards, herself a former high school standout and college basketball player, acknowledges her as one of the best and strongest players she’s ever seen.

Normal times

With uncertainty hanging in the air due to recent developments, now more than ever people are clinging onto sports for comfort. Area student-athletes in particular have been preparing themselves all summer in anticipation for the 2021-2022 LHSAA fall sports season.

Mamou native Chapman joins SEH softball

Alex Chapman has been named the new St. Edmund head softball coach. Chapman, 29, is a 2010 Mamou graduate where he played baseball, basketball and football. While he attended LSU Eunice, he was an assistant baseball coach at Mamou.

Continuing the dream

The dream continues for Ville Platte’s Trinity Leday. The 1,000-point career scorer and standout signed a Letter of Intent to play college basketball for Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. “Huntingdon called me during the basketball season,” she said. “I visited and really like the program.

Basile High to field girls’ softball team for first time since 1967

Basile High School is adding girls’ softball as a new sport in the athletic department for the upcoming school year. The addition of this team along with the girls’ golf team (which was started in 2016) shows the school’s recent efforts in expanding the girls’ athletic program.

All-State diamond teams

The Jena Lady Giants topped the All-State Softball Team in Class 3A by having junior infielder Tori Shirley (.491) as outstanding player and Sarah Roark as coach of the year. Also making the first team with Shirley was senior utility player Janasia Jones (.439).

PINE PRAIRIE -- There wasn’t much left to be said about the high school softball career of Pine Prairie’s Maycie Hardy. She’s been named all-district, all-parish, all-star.

Trojans are named to All-District baseball team

Several members of the Sacred Heart baseball team were named to the All-District team in District 5-1A. A pair of juniors in Isaac Leger as an infielder and Zeph Arnold as an outfielder cracked the list of first team players. Senior Trojan Alex McElwee also made first team as a catcher.
