Governor John Bel Edwards visited Ville Platte High Friday to congratulate Evangeline Parish public schools, recognized for their achievements and featured in US News and World Report. The schools were ranked on their performance on state required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare their students for college.
Ville Platte Mayor Jennifer Vidrine hyped up the crowd of students and citizens in Ville Platte high’s gym. The governor took the center of the court to roaring applause. He thanked the veterans in attendance and talked about school funding in Louisiana as part of his campaign. He told the students he hoped they are encouraged about their future and told them to thank their teachers and family members who make their education possible. He also said, “And when you go to bed at night, make sure you say a prayer of thanksgiving to God before you ask Him for a new blessing, because we’ve all been blessed beyond measure.”
Edwards then gave an official statement from the state of Louisiana, recognizing each high school as one of America’s best schools. Principals and representatives from Basile High, Ville Platte High, Pine Prairie High, and Mamou High were there to accept their framed proclamations while posing for pictures with Governor Edwards, Mayor Vidrine, and Superintendent Darwan Lazard.
Lazard told the students to give themselves a round of applause for all their hard work. He congratulated the principals, teachers, and staff, and spoke of his gratitude to be superintendent.
Vidrine presented a delighted Edwards with a purple Ville Platte high T-shirt with the words “Governor Bulldog.” He then shook hands and thanked each veteran in attendance.
