Editor:

I cannot sit idly by anymore and allow the ignorance, foolishness, total disregard, and neglect of duty to continue without voicing concern. How can we expect a school system to thrive, when, at every turn, ignorance, politics, self absorption, selfishness, and disregard for our citizens in the Black community, and many of our public school children, are negatively impacted by those in leadership roles?
We vote some people into office who lack the knowledge to make decisions that are in the best interest of their constituents. We’ve done this too long, for too many years. What I express may result in me being excluded by some and lose friends and acquaintances by others, but it’s time that someone voices the concerns that have diminished the hope for our children, that is to receive the best education possible. Our children are in the news for fighting, killing, and disrespecting each other every day. That’s what makes news, and that’s what is dominant in the minds of those who can make a difference in the lives of our children. There is little said about those who excel, despite the challenges that face them each day. But, look and listen to the ones who make policies for our educational system. My Lord!
The school board members are at the top of the chain that creates possibilities for excellence in our public schools. However, the top link of Evangeline Parish’s School Board chain is rusty, to the point of breaking. How can we expect the best from our teachers and students when Mr. Ellis Guillory, a board member shouts degrading names and accusations at a citizen in the audience for utilizing his First Amendment right? And, that is putting it lightly! Where is the integrity and character needed to lead? Mr. Guillory’s outburst was ugly, unnecessary, and embarrassing, from what I’ve heard.
Mr. Arthur Sampson is hated by many for having the courage to speak the truth, in place of those who are fearful of the backlash. But, he speaks boldly in the interest of anyone who has a need to be heard. I admire him for standing his ground and enduring hatred and criticism, for the sake of others. What he does is thankless. We turn a blind eye, and allow too many issues that are not in the best interest of our children and our community to take place. It’s time for a change.
Board Member, Ms. Georgianna Wilson, please be aware and take into account what you vote on regarding reapportionment and any other matters that affect us? We finally have a larger percentage of voters in your district, and you agree to allow a change that will minimize that percentage?
Board members, please do what is best for all of our children and stop playing politics; taking turns on having your way – your way that impacts only those in your district. You all, working together, for the betterment of our schools would be so refreshing, and a needed change, especially now; with all that we have going against us.
I am convicted by my principles, and I take a stand before I leave this earth for what is right, and what has been wrong for all of my years (soon to be 70 years next month) that I have been in the community of Ville Platte. Say what you like, but I speak the truth, without regret.
