The Knights Templar was a religious order that was created in the 1100s. Their claim to fame was recapturing the Holy Land and their subsequent involvement in the Crusades. However, about two centuries later, scandal surrounded the Templars causing the order to become virtually extinct. At the time, some Templars escaped and hid away some of their vast amounts of treasure.
I have always been interested in stories about the Templars and especially the tales of them finding the Holy Grail.
A while back, I watched Pirate Treasure of the Knights Templar which explored the legendary pirate Blackbeard looting Templar treasure. According to accounts, the pirate ship sunk off of the coast of Madagascar.
Recently, over the Thanksgiving weekend, I started binge watching Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch. The show revolves around the ranch’s owner, Duane Ollinger, and his son, Chad. Duane discovers a cavern on his Utah property and learns of Aztec gold buried inside the caves. The Ollingers then bring in a team to find a dry entrance to the cavern.
The story of the gold goes like this. When Hernan Cortes reached Mexico, the Aztecs wanted to hide their vast treasure from the Spaniards and brought it to modern day Utah where it was buried on Ute land. Normally, this would be the point where I’d make a My Cousin Vinny reference, but I think I am finally maturing as a writer.
Anyway, getting back to Blind Frog Ranch, the crew spends two seasons trying to find a dry entrance. I understand, like WWE, the show has to be overdramatized to get so many episodes out of it. But, seriously, part of the reason why it takes so long is equipment failure due to certain anomalies. It is like every time they get close, something pushes back. Also, the crew is forced to deal with animal mutilations caused by suspected skinwalkers, trespassers, and Apache helicopter flyovers.
The crew finally finds a dry entrance at the end of Season 2 but has to cut the mission short because of exposure to dangerous gas.
I do not want to give away too much of the show, but the crew discovers it is actually iridium that is buried inside igneous rocks that are buried in the caverns. The only gold that is found over the first two seasons are a few Mormon coins and a coin with what looks to me to be a Templar cross. It is not outside the realm of possibility for a Templar coin to be found in Utah. Hear me out. The Templar Knights could have joined explorers like Cortes on their voyages to the Americas and brought some of their treasure with them.
Look, I know I an not the smartest person in the world. I am only a sports reporter who was blessed with the opportunity to be the editor of this fine publication. But, I am smart enough to know it is easier to search for other Templar coins on your property than to risk exposure to radiation and hydrogen sulfide gas in underground caves. Who knows what other Templar treasure is buried here in the New World. Could the Ark of the Covenant be buried somewhere in the middle of Montana? Dang it! I might have to start binge watching The Curse of Oak Island. I better get my tac-tac ready.
