A week after an ordinance was proposed dealing with the appointment of a police chief, the Turkey Creek Village Council at its regular meeting Tuesday voted to adopt the ordinance and enacted the policy and procedures for the chief.
The newly adopted ordinance outlines the qualifications for the position of police chief. The qualifications, in part, call for the chief to have a high school diploma or a valid certification of equivalency issued by a state department of education. The person appointed also must pass a drug test, must take and pass a physical, must be able to carry a firearm, be 25 years or older, cannot be a convicted felon, be a born citizen of the U.S., have a valid drivers license, and must take and pass a psychological evaluation.
After the ordinance was adopted, Mayor Phillip Cavins recommended hiring Benjamin Bordelon as chief with a set wage of $15.00 per hour. Upon the mayor’s recommendation, the council voted to introduce an ordinance to hire Bordelon pending his psychiatric examination and to set his salary.
The council will vote to adopt the ordinance at a special meeting next Tuesday, January 22, at 6:20 p.m.
Other proposed ordinances the council voted to introduce during this week’s meeting deal with the appointment of village clerk/tax collector, the mayor’s salary, and the council’s salary. The salaries will remain the same as under the previous administration.
The council will also vote to adopt these ordinances at next week’s special meeting.
In other business, the council:
• voted to reimburse the mayor and council for cost of oath of office.
• reappointed Kurry Stewart as mayor pro temp.
• reappointed John S. Dowling as village certified public accountant and Kolder, Slaven, and Co., LLC as village auditor.
• reappointed Greg Vidrine as village attorney and Melissa Ferguson as village clerk/tax collector and as mayor’s clerk of court.
• approved a $50.00 cell phone stipend for the mayor and a $40.00 stipend for the village clerk.
• terminated officer Shane Lofton.
