Staff Report

Recently, the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department teamed up with the Krewe de Evangeline Coalition to help prevent the progression of underage drinking.
The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department worked an Under Age Drinking Detail in an effort to help reduce the number of those under the legal age who are consuming alcoholic beverages. During their patrol, deputies made contact with several individuals under the legal age who were in possession of alcoholic beverages. These beverages were destroyed, and their parents were contacted and took custody of their juvenile children.
“Statistics show youths who drink are more likely to be victims of violent crime, to be in alcohol related traffic crashes, and to have serious school related problems,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Even though parents have more influence on their children’s values and decision about consuming alcohol, others should make every effort possible in reducing the number of youths who use alcohol. It appears more young people are using alcohol than they are smoking or using illegal drugs. We need to continue to educate these kids in an effort to make them aware of the possible dangers they may be facing.”
