In Isaiah 31:1 (KJV), the prophet Isaiah warned God’s people not to look to Egypt for help, but to trust the Lord to defend Jerusalem against the Assyrians. The real source of Israel’s difficulty was they did not look to God, nor did they seek Him. Instead, they turned to an outside source. It was a big mistake. We read, “Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the Lord.”
This message, spoken by Isaiah warning Judah, is a message for us as well. Woe to those who turn away from God and turn to some materialistic or human help. Now don’t misunderstand me, God is not saying we should not rely on others for day to day problems. We need one another and we should, as Christians, be willing to help one another and encourage each other. God expects you to be reasonable, but in the final analysis, God wants top priority as far as giving help is concerned.
Where do you go for help when the pressure is on? Do you run to your banker, or your preacher? Where do you go? Although it is nice to ask others for advice, in the end, we must go to God for help. We need His input. We need his guidance. The psalmist wrote in Psalm 20:7 (KJV), “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” There is only one source of dependable power, and that is the power of our God. Turn to the Lord first and foremost.
