Turkey Creek Chief of Police Shawn Eckhart, during the council meeting held Tuesday, September 15, reported he had been contacted by the Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police about a request to implement a police manual.
Chief Eckhart said he found a model police manual from a police department in the northern part of the country. “It handles certain situations that we really don’t see here to much,” he expressed, “but there are some things like de-escalation that we want in the policy manual for liability issues to say what our officers should do and should not do in certain situations.”
The councilmen were given copies of the 200-plus page policy manual for them to review before the next meeting. The council voted to propose an ordinance to implement the policy manual, and there will be a public hearing on Tuesday, October 20, at 6:20 p.m. regarding the matter.
Later in the meeting, Mayor Phillip Cavins reported the village is taking part in a pilot program to implement electronic water meters. He signed an agreement with Coburn’s to retrofit 24 meters.
“With that,” said the mayor, “our customers will actually get an app on their phone and see when the water was used and how much was used.”
Mayor Cavins further reported 900 meters will ultimately be retrofitted.
“It will be no additional costs to our customers and a huge improvement to our system,” he said.
