The Turkey Creek Village Council, during its meeting Tuesday, voted to propose changes to collections of insurance premium taxes and traffic fines. Both proposed ordinances are set for a public hearing on Tuesday, December 17, beginning at 6:15 p.m.
The insurance ordinance would allow LaMATS (Louisiana Municipal Advisory and Technical Services Bureau) to collect the premium taxes owed to the village.
“We are not collecting to the fullest of our extent,” said Mayor Phillip Cavins. “We miss some because we don’t have somebody in our office calling these insurance companies to make sure they pay. LaMATS will handle all of that for us.”
He continued, “It would improve our income because they’re more efficient at collecting the insurance premium tax than we are.”
As for the other ordinance, Village Engineer Adam Janet then reported on proposed amendments to the ordinance pertaining to the operations and collections manual including adjustments to the schedule of traffic fines.
“We’re going up just what the state is charging us,” Mayor Cavins said. “That means our police department gets to keep a little more of the money.”
Janet further reported on updates regarding the elevated water tower.
