With the new school year quickly approaching, safety should be a priority for our children and our communities.
The Turkey Creek Police Department conducted an insurance checkpoint on Saturday, August 15, from 11 a.m. to noon. The checkpoint was conducted on La Hwy 13. During the checkpoint, 90 vehicles were screened resulting in seven motorists being cited for insurance and registration violations, one driving with a suspended license, and one drug related arrest was made. This insurance checkpoint was conducted to encourage compliance with the state’s compulsory insurance law and bring awareness to operators before the start of the new school year.
According to Louisiana state law, all vehicles registered in the state must be insured. Louisiana law also requires vehicles must have proof of insurance in the vehicle and provide it when requested by law enforcement.
This proof of insurance can be shown either with an insurance card or electronically. This means that if available, you can download an insurance app onto your phone or simply take a photo of the valid card with your phone and show it when asked. It is always important to secure the proof in your vehicle.
Additional insurance compliance checkpoints in Turkey Creek may be conducted in the future, and all drivers are reminded that three items must be present when driving on Louisiana roadways; valid proof of insurance, vehicle registration and your valid drivers license. This is also the case if you are driving a vehicle not owned by you. It is your responsibility, as the operator, to secure these documents in the vehicle you are driving.
I would like to commend the Officers who participated on this detail to include assistance from Pine Prairie Police Department.
