James Chuncey Fontenot, a resident of Pine Prairie living on 9th Street, proposed his property to be annexed into the corporate limits of the village. His proposal came during the village council meeting held Thursday, August 13.
“I’m active in the community and try to help out in the community especially with the youth,” Fontenot said. “I would just like for my wife and I to vote for things in the city.”
Mayor Quint West told Fontenot the council will look into the proposal and get back with him on the issue.
Mayor West then made a counter-proposal to annex the entire block around Fontenot’s property. “The benefit would be they would have the support of our police force,” said the mayor.”
He added, “Their kids come here. Everything they do is in Pine Prairie, but they have no say so in what goes on in Pine Prairie where their kids go to school.”
Earlier in the meeting, Village Engineer Ronald Landreneau reported the village was approved for and additional $34,775.22 in CARES Act funding.
In other business, the council adopted a resolution setting the 2020 property tax millages and approved a cooperative endeavor agreement with the Village of Turkey Creek for assistance with the K9 ICE unit if needed.
