An emergency notification rang out on smart phones in the Ville Platte area at 8:43 p.m. Sunday, December 9, about a red Dodge Ram 1500 truck.
The notification was an AMBER Alert issued by Louisiana State Police on behalf of the Evangeline Parish Sheriff office regarding the disappearance of three-year-old Paizley Ann Fontenot who had been taken by her non-custodial father Brandon Phillip “Snoopy” Fontenot. Fontenot, allegedly, took his daughter from the biological mother’s residence on Norward Street in Ville Platte on Sunday afternoon around 12:35 p.m.
According to the initial complaint report obtained from the Evangeline Parish Sheriff office, the minor child’s legal guardian (grandmother) was letting her spend the night with the biological mother as had been the case for a few days at a time with a goal of the biological mother being reunited with her child once recovering from her drug addiction.
The initial report went on to state the father, Fontenot, was staying at the biological mother’s home on Saturday night “because he had nowhere else to go.”
At some point during the day on Sunday, while the biological mother was in the back room of the residence and while the biological great-grandmother was cooking lunch, Fontenot left the residence with the minor child in his red Dodge pickup.
Also according to the initial report, the legal guardian was granted custody of the minor child “until the mother decided to dissolve the agreement.” The mother advised deputies she had not wished to dissolve the custody agreement and that she and the father of the minor child were never married.
The mother further told deputies the father had previously made similar threats “to harm the children” and had earlier that day commented “if I can’t have you, you can’t have her.” According to the mother, the father had also appeared to be paranoid and “under the influence of narcotics, specifically methamphetamine.”
It was believed, after the incident, Fontenot was heading toward his mother’s residence in Centerville, Miss., where he had “visited the week prior,” according to the initial report.
Following the original reporting of the incident, Evangeline Parish deputies searched the area around the father’s residence for some time before informing surrounding law enforcement agencies and ultimately Louisiana State Police regarding the AMBER alert.
Later that evening before midnight, Fontenot was apprehended by authorities in Amite County, Miss., and the minor child was recovered and returned safely to Ville Platte.
According to KATC-TV, “I want to say Thank you to all the officers for getting my baby back safe. Bless y’all,” Sylvester wrote on her Facebook page after her daughter was returned safe.
A charge of aggravated kidnapping of a child against Fontenot is pending his extradition from Mississippi. Authorities from Evangeline Parish left Tuesday morning to take him into custody.
