At the Wednesday, October 14, Mamou Town Council meeting, the council heard from Charles Perdices who announced the annual Veteran’s Day celebration on Wednesday, November 11, will be scaled back this year because of COVID-19. There will not be a parade, but the floats, made by students of Mamou Elementary, will be put on display. The veterans will have a ceremony to retire the old flag. They will also have hot dogs, hamburgers, and refreshments. The flag ceremony and the fly-over is planned for 11 a.m. Perdices asked the council if they could provide the funds for the food and refreshments. The council agreed. Paul Fuselier with Acadian Ambulance was in the audience. He offered to help Perdices and the veterans with any assistance they need. “In 1971 our company was started with Vietnam veterans. That’s who our first medics were,” said Fuselier.
The council also heard from town engineer David Hidalgo who presented the low bids for the Water Improvements Project. There are three contracts. Contract A is for the water plant, with the low bid from Trek, Incorporated from Bunkie for the amount of $2,263,782, but Hidalgo said he and the contractor could further reduce the cost by $142,000. Contract B is for two new water wells, with the low bid from Layne Christensen Company of Rayne, with the bid of $879,968. Hidalgo said he could reduce that amount by about $100,000. The council agreed to award the contracts to the low bidders. Contract C is for the water meters, but they have not started accepting bids yet because they had to change some of the requirements for the contract.
Mayor Fontenot announced Trick-or-Treat times for the town will be Saturday, October 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
