The Mamou Police Department has arrested one individual following a shooting that occurred early in the morning on Saturday, August 11, 2018.
The incident was first reported at around 1:18 a.m. when a call was made from 513 Ash St. in Mamou. The caller according to Mamou Police Chief Brent Zackery stated that the victim, Jamien Williams, “was shot in the chest twice.”
When law enforcement officers with the MPD arrived on scene the chief stated, “The victim was standing in front of the residence bleeding from his stomach area near his belly button, and he had been shot around the neck area.”
The suspect, who was identified as Markeith Guillory, “was not at the scene when law enforcement officers arrived.”
To locate Guillory, who had an address of 317 Third St., Oberlin, the MPD requested assistance from other local law-enforcement agencies in and around that area.
The suspect, who according to Chief Zackery, “turn himself in later that morning at around 5 a.m.,” is believed to have left the scene of the crime and proceeded on to La. Hwy. 104 heading toward Oberlin. The chief said that at some point, Guillory “apparently ran out of gas, and then went to a couple of houses to get help.”
According to Chief Zackery, Guillory “made it back to Oberlin before he returned to Mamou to turn himself in.”
Upon questioning, the chief said, “Guillory advised that he did shoot the victim, and that it was in self defense.”
The Chief also stated that “Guillory was driving a 2012 Chevy Silverado Z71 at the time of the shooting, and the victim is believed to have been walking.”
Following the incident the victim was transported to Rapides Hospital, where he remains in stable condition although a bullet remains lodged in his stomach.
Guillory, who the MPD later learned has another address of 517 8th St., Mamou, was arrested on one count of attempted second degree murder and currently remains incarcerated.
This matter is still under investigation and is being handled by the MPD, with assistance from the Evangeline Parish District Attorney’s Office.
After the incident the chief stated, “Anyone walking in town at night will be stopped and asked to present identification. If juveniles are walking at night they will be picked up and their parent’s will be cited.”
The chief also thanked the district attorney’s office for their assistance in this matter.
