The Mamou Council voted Wednesday to approve MedExpress to have service inside the town on a one-and-one rotation with Acadian Ambulance.
After the vote, Paul Fuselier, on behalf of Acadian, voiced concerns over the response criteria for Mamou in its contract with the Evangeline Parish Police Jury. Mayor Ricky Fontenot advised Fuselier to take up the issue with the parish.
“Instead of us going at each other,” the mayor said, “I think (MedExpress) wouldn’t come into this town if they didn’t want to do a good job. If they don’t do a good job, then next year we won’t give them a license.”
“I don’t want to tell Acadian Ambulance how to run their business,” he continued, “and I don’t want to tell MedExpress how to run their business. If I’m not satisfied with either one, then they will hear about it.”
Marvin Richard, on behalf of MedExpress, told the council, “We are very appreciative of y’all letting us in your town. We are going to make you proud and do what we do in every other community. We are going to work hard.”
Mayor Fontenot later said, “We’re happy to have MedExpress along with Acadian Ambulance. I think it’s great that the town has two ambulance services to serve the people of Mamou.”
Earlier in the meeting, Chief Brent Zackery urged the public to lock their vehicles after a recent rash of vehicle thefts. “Don’t leave your keys in your car and don’t leave anything of value inside your vehicle,” he said. “If it’s running, don’t leave your car unattended.”
In other business, the council voted to amend the 2020 budget and adopt the 2021 budget.
