Charles Perdices, on behalf of the Mamou American Legion, addressed the Mamou Town Council Wednesday regarding plans for this year’s Veteran’s Day celebration at the Legion hall.
Perdices commented the event will be “another two days like we did last year, but, hopefully, we can get a bigger crowd.”
The event will get started on Friday, November 9, with a DJ inside the hall. Perdices stated there will be vendors around the hall and food and drinks will be available.
Lineup for the parade on Saturday, November 10, will be at 10:00 a.m. at Mamou High School, and the parade will be begin at 11:00 a.m.
According to Perdices, the grand marshal for the parade will be Willie Durriseau. “He is a World War II veteran and is 100-years-old,” said Perdices, “and this year is also the 100th Anniversary of Veteran’s Day.”
Kyle Spears will again do the flyover for the parade, and, as Perdices said, “There are going to be bus loads of people coming here from Fort Polk to not only watch the parade but participate in the parade as well.”
Perdices pointed out that a change has been made to the parade route from last year. He said, “We are moving the parade route on the regular road which is Main Street. We’re going to follow that instead of going down like we did last time.”
He added, “It should take us probably a good hour to get everybody to the” Legion hall.
The ceremony at the Legion hall will then begin at 12:15 p.m. with several speakers. After the ceremony, there will be a DJ as well as David Miley who is a one-man band from Texas. “I saw him at Cazan’s and recruited him to come and join us,” said Perdices. “He’s excited to be able to do that.”
Also, on Saturday, auctioneer Kevin Fontenot will conduct the pie auction.
The weekend will also feature a car show and the Corvette Club of Lake Charles. For the car show and all of the events, Perdices requested the council to block off the streets from the American Legion to 7th Street.
Perdices stated he is hopeful this event will attract more members to join the Mamou American Legion and concluded, “We’re trying to make this a tradition that continues on each year.”
