An Evangeline Parish native, who was convicted of the murders of Michaela “Mickey” Shunick of Lafayette and Lisa Pate of Youngsville, attempted to escape at 4:30 a.m. on Monday morning from Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola.
Communications Director for the Department of Corrections Ken Pastorick had confirmed Brandon Scott Lavergne had attempted to escape.
Pastorick, according to KLFY T.V., said, “Officers captured him through multiple alarms and our prison staff. He did try and escape from his prison camp, however, he didn’t get past his perimeter fence.
Lavergne pled guilty to the first-degree murders in August 2012 and was sentenced to life in prison. As part of the plea negotiations, Lavergne led detectives to the site where he buried Shunick’s body in the Pine Clair Cemetery off of La. Hwy 10 between Vidrine and Beaver.
He was previously sentenced in Evangeline Parish to serve 10 years at hard labor in 2000 by the Honorable Preston N. Aucoin for aggravated burglary of an inhabited dwelling and aggravated sexual battery.
