“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” -John 15:13
When tragedy struck three St. Landry Parish churches in 2019, Pastor Freddie Jack of St. John Baptist Church in Ville Platte hit the ground running to provide physical and spiritual relief. Through his work as President of the 7th District Baptist Association, Pastor Jack was able to get Vice President to come tour the damage caused by the fires.
As a result, Pastor Jack was presented a United States Flag that was flown over the United States Capitol while the body of Civil Rights leader and Congressman John Lewis was lying in state.
Pastor Jack received the Flag during the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, September 13. The service was also the first one back in the church since COVID-19.
“It’s awesome,” said Pastor Jack. It’s a once in a lifetime thing to receive a Flag that actually was flown while (Congressman Lewis’) body was lying in state. It’s a part of history, and it will be forever mentioned during our Black History Month.”
The presentation was made by Pastor Jack’s hunting buddy Tyrone Glover, who works for Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins.
“Pastor Jack is Ville Platte,” Glover said. “He is bigger than Ville Platte. You can’t go anywhere without hearing his name mentioned and the tireless work he did when the churches were burned. He had to keep everybody together as president of the 7th District.”
“It’s a great honor to know him,” Glover continued. “When people talk about civil rights today, they can’t speak about it without speaking of Pastor Jack. He’s done so much for the City of Ville Platte, and giving him this Flag is just a small token. His name was the first name God put in my spirit to give this Flag.”
Pastor Jack concluded, “For (Tyrone) to think so highly of me because of the little work that I do is an admirable opportunity for me to receive that Flag that marked the life of a great man. He remained positive for the cause to fight for justice.”
