A high speed chase last weekend, which started in Mamou and ended in Ville Platte, resulted in the arrest of Stacy J. Charlot.
The chase began around 10:30 p.m. when an officer with the Mamou Police Department noticed a vehicle heading south on Hwy. 13 driving 60 miles per hour in a 45 mph speed zone.
According to the arrest warrant for Charlot, the passenger of the KIA Optima stated she and the driver “were involved in a verbal altercation when the officer first activated his emergency lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop.” The passenger told law enforcement, “she told Stacey Charlot to pull over and just stop but he refused for reasons unknown.”
In the arrest warrant for Charlot it states the officer then attempted to stop the four door KIA Optima with their lights and sirens as the suspect “turned onto Oberlin Road.”
While traveling on Oberlin Rd., the suspect then turned on Mike Lane heading north before making a right turn onto Beaver Rd. Next the suspect turned right back onto Hwy. 13 traveling south.
The warrant states, “As we approached Pine Street, it (the KIA Optima) almost hit another vehicle from behind as they pulled over to the shoulder and passed another vehicle.”
After traveling on several streets in Mamou, the driver of the KIA Optima led law enforcement back to Hwy. 13. When the suspect made a sharp turn onto Hwy. 13, the warrant states, the driver almost hit the officer’s unit and ran him off the road.
Eventually the high speed chase made its way to La. Hwy. 10, where Charlot’s speed reached 105 mph as he passed Vidrine Elementary School, according to the warrant.
The warrant continued, “As we entered in Ville Platte, speeds were 118 mph in a 55,” before the driver’s speed dropped to 56 mph on Main Street.
According to the warrant, Charlot “almost hit another vehicle as it disregarded a red light.”
After sending officers on a chase on several city streets in Ville Platte, the chase came to an end on Main Street when Charlot crashed into a Ville Platte police unit.
The warrant explained, “The subject refused to exit the vehicle so he was forcibly removed from the vehicle by police officers. While on the ground, the subject resisted officers trying to place hand restraints on him.”
Charlot was able to break free from officers attempting to apprehend him, which resulted in Evangeline Parish Sheriff deputies deploying a taser to be able to detain the suspect.
Charlot was booked into the parish jail and charged with nine counts of speeding, careless operation, nine counts of disobeying a stop sign, driving left of center, resisting an officer, aggravated flight from an officer, and disobeying a red light.
Local agencies that assistance the MPD in this high speed chase were the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Ville Platte Police Department.
