EPPJ demands State’s assistance on highways

The Evangeline Parish Police Jury is demanding assistance from the State of Louisiana for state highway repairs with a resolution the jury approved during a special meeting on Thursday.
In the resolution, the EPPJ is specifically requesting that the State repair La. Hwy. 3187 (Crooked Creek Road) in District 4 and La. Hwy. 3277 (George Soileau Road) and Hyw. 1159 in District 2. Police Juror Bryan Vidrine also requested to include La. Hwy. 106 in the resolution. However, due to the fact that the request for road work on Hwy. 106 has been made to legislatures and DOTD many times, the jury made the decision not to include Hwy. 106.
During the meeting, District 4 Police Juror Lamar Johnson said, “I brought this up because there is two-and-a-half miles of road that no one wants to go down with a motor home because it is so rough and so bad.”
The road Johnson spoke about is used for access to the Crooked Creak Recreational Area, which is also located in District 4.
The park is one that Johnson said the “two-and-a-half miles of road is the only way to get to the park from the north.” According to Johnson though, due to the condition of the road, visitors have to take a longer alternative route. This, Johnson said, is affecting the number of visitors to the local recreational area.
“Our park has managed to run with no assistance virtually for 10 years,” said Johnson. “Now because of the condition of the roads we are fixing to have to put a bunch of money in or do something because we can’t get the people in there without fixing roads.”
According to Johnson, the two-and-a-half miles of road he is requesting that the State repair hasn’t been worked on once during his 10 years as a police juror. Johnson said, “Not one red cent has been put in that district for work on State highways. No work of any substance has been done.”
Johnson then continued, “I would love to see these two-and-a-half miles repaired in the next six months to a year.”
