An incident that could have ended horribly wrong had a happy ending after an Acadiana fisherman rescued puppies from a bayou.
The fisherman, Mac Kennedy, was fishing near Pat’s Restaurant in Henderson when he spotted a man pull up to the scene in a late-model truck and throw a dog food bag into a canal.
Kennedy went to retrieve the piece of litter and found the bag contained eight newborn black lab puppies. Upon his discovery, Kennedy contacted authorities to give a description of the littering suspect. He also contacted Precious Paw Prints Animal Rescue in Acadia Parish who turned the puppies over to Every Paw Animal Rescue (EPAR) here in Evangeline Parish.
“Precious Paw Prints was not equipped for newborn puppies like that,” said Jen Shaw, Executive Vice President/Director of EPAR. “They contacted us and asked if we could take them in, and they brought them to us immediately.”
Shaw said, “Our miracle puppies are growing up fast. Because of all the amazing people, their support, and prayers, these ‘Basin’ puppies have a chance at a happy and healthy life.
On Thursday, March 12, EPAR arranged for the puppies to be reunited with Kennedy before they are adopted.
“They are going to be ready for adoption on the first week of April,” Shaw said, “and we already have over 100 applications for them.”
Those wishing to donate to the puppies’ care and other rescued animals can donate to EPAR through its PayPal account at Eparinc@yahoo.com or by sending a check or money order to EPAR, 2802 Oberlin Road, Mamou, LA 70554. All donations are tax-deductible.
EPAR is also proceeding on its new facility which will be constructed next to the old Pizza Hut location in Ville Platte. According to Shaw, the land has been purchased and work will begin once the weather stabilizes. The facility will be an intake center and will have a separate intake for the sheriff’s office.
