A Eunice man who escaped from the St. Landry Parish Jail at about 9 p.m. Sunday, stole an ATV from a residence in Eunice and surrendered to deputies on Wednesday, according to a news release from Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
Ronald A. McGee, of the 2000 block of West Dudley Street, Eunice, has been charged with unauthorized use of a movable and simple escape.
McGee was in the parish lockup on theft and burglary charges when he escaped.
McGee fled from the parish jail lobby at 9 p.m. Sunday after returning from a work release detail, Guidroz said.
McGee had been harassing his ex-girlfriend while on work release, and was speaking with deputies in the jail lobby when he fled on foot, Guidroz said.
Opelousas and St. Landry Parish deputies began a search in the area but were unable to locate McGee.
On Monday, a Mamou Police officer spotted McGee on an ATV in a field at the St. Landry Parish line at La. 13, Guidroz said.
“A Mamou police officer and a deputy with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s office pursued McGee but were unsuccessful in apprehending him. During the pursuit, it was reported a Mamou patrol unit, in a legal intervention maneuver, struck the ATV disabling it,” Guidroz said.
Guidroz said the ATV was stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Ricky Myers Road in Eunice.
On Wednesday, the St. Landry Sheriff’s Office was notified that McGee wanted to turn himself in and that he would be at a local hospital to undergo treatment for injuries he sustained during his escape. Detectives with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s took McGee into custody after he was medically cleared at a local hospital.
McGee was interviewed, and later transported back to the parish jail where he was charged with simple escape and unauthorized use of a movable, he said.
