City of Ville Platte takes steps enforcing nuisance ordinances

Over the past several months, the City of Ville Platte has been taking additional steps to enforce its nuisance ordinances regarding properties in the city.
The latest steps taken involve mailing notices to the property owner. The notices read, “The City of Ville Platte is trying to improve the quality of life for all citizens by requiring property owners to keep their properties clean, neat, and safe.”
The notices then list the violations of the ordinance such as structure/building needs to be demolished; abandoned vehicles, appliances, junk in yard; overgrown grass, weeds, trees need cutting and removal; accumulation of trash/refuse needs to be cleaned; trash in yard; and building in dilapidated/dangerous condition.
The notices also grant the property owner the right to appeal at an upcoming meeting of the Ville Platte City Council.
“After the appeal dates have passed,” the notices read, “the city will proceed to abate the nuisance and shall provide you with a statement of all costs incurred. If the statement of costs is not paid within 30 days, the incurred costs will be added to and invoiced on your city property tax bill. Additionally, a copy of this letter will be filed in the mortgage records with the Evangeline Parish Clerk of Court’s office.”
According to records obtained from the clerk’s office, seven affidavits were filed at the end of 2019.
