The Chataignier Council, at its meeting Monday, heard from Events Coordinator Christina Darbonne about the annual Breast Cancer Walk and Gumbo Cookoff that is set for October.
Darbonne explained to the council that she is looking for everyone from the community to help out in supporting the event that raised enough money last year for seven people who are under-insured or who have no health insurance to receive free mammograms.
“We have a lot of work that goes on for it like with every single event,” said Darbonne. “It’s not just the planning and making phone calls, but it’s all the labor. Eight women and two men have been handling it, and it’s just too much for us. We invite everyone to come out and help us so we can continue doing it.”
Darbonne informed the council that there will be a meeting tonight (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. at the village hall to discuss who will be responsible for all of the labor projects.
Also during the meeting, the council heard from Village Administrator Gail McDavid that the work inside the old library is completed. He further stated that the inside and outside still needs to be cleaned before it can be rented out for events.
Mayor Jackie Malveaux Thomas addressed some concerns from residents of the village about the old library. “Some people are concerned about it becoming a party spot,” she said. “We’re going to start off just renting the building for very minor things like wedding showers and small birthday parties. It wouldn’t be a club next door to your houses.”
She continued, “We’re just going to be very cautious as to whom we rent the building out to and what types of events are actually going to go on there.”
The mayor added that there will be certain times during the day that the building can be rented and that “there will be a certain time where it’ll have to close.”
