Beginning Saturday, August 1, the Village of Chataignier will charge a $3.00 convenience fee on all credit card and debit card transactions.
The news came during the council meeting held Monday, July 20.
As Mayor Justin Darbonne explained, the village paid the bank $3,221.00 out of the sewer fund during fiscal year 2019-2020 for card transactions. Over that same time period, the village paid the bank $1,526.00 out of its general fund for similar transactions.
“That’s a lot of money the village is putting out,” said Mayor Darbonne, “and we’re not getting anything back. We’re not looking to make money. We just want to cover our costs.”
Earlier in the meeting, the council voted to amend the ordinance regarding the sale of the Gula Miller property. As the mayor explained, the property sizes changed because of a water line running across the property from Church Street to First Street. The water line was running down the middle of the property but has to be on the boundary of the properties in order for right-of-way access. Also changing are the prices.
The council also tabled the purchase of a cross drain to be installed at the intersection of Charles Armand Jr. St. and First Street. The cross drain is needed in order to widen the turn at that intersection. The Evangeline Parish Police Jury will install it, but the village has to purchase it at a price of around $1,400.00.
In other business, Mayor Darbonne reported the village will be applying for funds through the CARES Act.
