At the council meeting of Tuesday, May 19, Turkey Creek Mayor Phillip Cavins proposed the amendment of village ordinances. The council voted to accept the proposals, however, one of them caused the council to go into executive session.
Sending the council into executive session, on motion made by Councilman Neal King, was the issue of amending the ordinance which set the salary of the village clerk. Mayor Cavins proposed giving the current clerk, Melissa Ferguson, a $100.00 a month raise. The proposed raise would bring her monthly salary to $2,366.00.
“With us going full force with the police department and other things,” said the mayor, “that has in turn given Melissa more of a work load on a daily basis, so that’s why I’d like to compensate her.”
Once the council exited the executive session, Mayor Cavins reported, “We have decided to go forward with the raise for our clerk at $100.00 per month, and she will be paid out of our water department for that raise.”
The matter is now set for a public hearing before the next council action. The public hearing will be at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.
The other proposed ordinances deal with amending the village’s general fund and sales tax budgets. Mayor Cavins explained the village’s income that was factored into the proposed budget will be a “little off” because of the coronavirus.
“Our finances are looking fairly well,” the mayor said. “We are going to suffer in a few places like licenses and permits and our sales tax.”
Regardless, the village is expected to come in 25-percent under budget overall and 25-percent under budget for the streets. It is also slated to come in 2.5-percent under budget for the police department. However, as the mayor explained, the proposed budgetary amendments are to ensure the village is within the state guidelines.
Both ordinance amendments are set for a public hearing beginning at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.
